A Curse to be Broken

Hi Friends,

I have a message to share with you regarding another vision that the Lord has given me.  It is about breaking generational curses. I know this seems like a heavy topic. But it is something thing that every Christian needs to know.  It is important to understand how bondage can come to both Christians and non- Christians because of the sins of their parents and even those of their great-great grandparents.

There are several scriptures which speak of blessings and curses that God pronounces as judgments against people when there is sin:

  • “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”  Exodus 20:5-6 also Deuteronomy 5:9-10

  • “Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth; who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”  Exodus 34:7

  • “Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their      sins; also because of their ancestors’ sins they will waste away.” Leviticus 26:39

  • “Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps his covenant and his loving kindness to a thousandth generation with those who love him and keep his commandments; but repays those who hate him to their faces, to destroy them; He will not delay with him who hates him, he will repay him to his face.”  Deuteronomy 7:9-10

  • “Now when you tell this people all these words, they will say to you, “For what reason has the Lord declared all this great calamity against us?  And what is our iniquity, or what is our sin which we have committed against the Lord our God?’ Then you are to say to them, ‘It is because your forefathers have forsaken me’ declares the Lord, ‘and have followed other gods and served them and bowed down to them; but me they have forsaken and have not kept my law.”  Jeremiah 16:10-11

  • “You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm!  Nothing is too difficult for you, who shows loving kindness to thousands, but repays the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their children after them, O great and mighty God.”  Jeremiah 32:17-18

Note:   Please stay with me until the end of this, because we need to address the New Testament view as well.

The Vision

The vision is  quite simple. I saw a white letter-sized envelope addressed to
“T. Welsch.”  There was a street address shown, yet I only read the first line:  T. Welsch.

What is significant about this:

Welsch is my maiden name, so I wondered, “Who was T. Welsch?”  I knew that my brother had spent quite a bit of time researching our family lineage.  In fact, he was able to locate our relatives in Europe. When two of them came to New York City for a visit, my husband and I were able to spend the day with them.

I called my brother about this vision, and asked him if he knew of a T Welsch among our relatives.  I thought that the T. Welsch might be a cousin whom the Lord would ask me to share a message. I remember a cousin in my high school who I vaguely remember seeing in the year book.  Could her name have been Theresa?

However, my brother told me that when he read my text about T. Welsch, he felt it must have meant Theodore Welsch.  Theodore was my great grandfather on my father’s side. One set of cousins, an entire family group were all T. Welsch’s.   But since my brother had been researching our lineage, I believe that it was more likely that the deceased Theodore Welsch was the very one that the Lord was addressing.

The name “Theodore,” means “lover of God.”  Yet after my brother began to tell me stories of the family tree, it immediately became apparent, that there may be a generational curse upon our family.   He had proposed the idea, because of the numerous strange, and violent deaths, early deaths, suicide attempts, and insanity were on my father’s side of the family.

Family Deaths and Tragedies:

  • My father attempted suicide when he was sick with cancer.  But the Episcopal priest down the street was able to get the gun away from him.

  • An uncle, in a desperate moment, planned to kill himself along with his severely mentally handicapped child, by crashing his car.  It is the grace of God that caused him to change his mind.

  • My brother, hearing voices telling him that he was going to die, drove himself into a  stationary object and managed to survive. Again, it was the grace of God!

  • Another family member, who I have promised not to reveal, attempted suicide just a few years ago.

They were all direct descendants of Theodore.  And there is more:

  • My grandfather, a coal miner was crushed by rocks in a coal mining accident, and died.

  • His wife, my grandmother, was killed by lightning at her kitchen sink, when she was only 31, and had just given birth to my father one month before.

  • My great grandfather, Theodore, was killed by a train as he walked along the tracks.  His son witnessed the accident.

Theodore had nine children, many of whom suffered very bad deaths:

  • Not one, but two of his sons, contracted syphilis, which drove them insane, and lead them both to a death by paralysis.

  • One of Theodore’s children  died the same day he was born.

  • One child died at the age of 2 and then another died at the age of 7

Through the Adopted Mother:

  • Because my father’s mother died when he was only one month old, he was adopted by a wealthy woman, who ran off with the contractor that was building her house.  She divorced her husband, married the contractor and moved to Hollywood. The contractor was an alcoholic, so in a heated argument, my father at the age of 5 or 6, witnessed the man kill his adopted mother with a fireplace poker.

  • My father’s natural sister, lost her 7 year old child to a fire that he started, by playing with matches.

It is hard to believe that all this is the result of sin, but that is what I believe the Lord is showing me.  These sins continue to affect the Theodore Welsch family. Of course there are many last names that have become part of this family tree through marriage.

You can see that these sins have been visited upon the generations, even to the third and fourth generation.  But through repentance, prayer, renouncing the devil and his ways, and cleansing with the precious blood of Jesus, these generational curses can be broken.

But before I speak of these things, we must also see that there are sins that our mothers pass down to us as well.

Before my brother shared with me about the family lineage on my father’s side, I had always blamed my mother’s side of the family for the ungodly influence upon the family.  There is no lack of open doors to the enemy, which have come from her side of the family.

  • Through my grandfather, we have the worship of Maharajah Yogi, and the eastern religions.

  • Through his mother, my great grandmother we have the veneration of ancestors.  She belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, and traced our lineage 400 years back, showing a long line of aristocrats.

  • Through my mother, we have false religions: the B’ha’i faith,  Buddhism, astrology, and divination. These influences have taken root and produced a family health business. I call it “hocus-pocus medicine,” because it is clearly divination.

I now understand that God wanted me to see the pattern and magnitude of the effects of sin and destruction in my family lineage.   I believe that the Lord wants us to systematically pray for the breaking of each of these generational curses from every single person in the family.  This in not simply for my immediate family, but for everyone that is in the lineage of Theodore Welsch.

And it is not enough to break curses brought through this line, but it is also imperative to break those curses coming through the lines of those who marry into the Welsch lineage.

Jesus wants everyone to walk in freedom.  We can see God’s desire, and his plan of salvation in this passage. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind; to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  Luke 14:18-19

For those in my family who are born again and walking in close fellowship with God, I believe that these curses have already been broken.  When we give our lives to the Lord, the Lord delivers us from the kingdom of darkness, and we become his. We live in the light and in the favor of God.

However, when there are open doors to sin, because of a family member’s unrepentant heart, evil spirits believe they have a right to be there, to cause havoc in the lives of the family members.  As a child, I loved the Lord, and would spend time talking with him as I walked home from school everyday. Yet, I was tormented by violent dreams because of the open doors brought on by my father’s and mother’s personal sin, as well as the sin of my grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparents.

Even so, I am thankful that my father raised us in the Episcopal church.  Just a few years before his death, he became born again. He became the family evangelist, traveling to visit each of his six children and their families.   He gave each of us a Bible, and spoke of salvation and God’s love. With me, he invited me to an Episcopal retreat, where I was born again, delivered (with a capital D!) and baptized in the Holy Spirit!  Hallelujah!

I know there are different views as to how sin affects the generations, and how the curses are broken.  Some believe that when you are born again, the curse is broken immediately by the blood of Jesus.  “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.’”  Galatians 3:13

Some believe that the curse of the law, represents all the Old Testament curses, including generational curses so that the work was finished and complete because of the cross. They believe that instead there are familiar spirits, (spirits that have been in long association with a particular family) which hang around to oppress (the Christian) or possess (a non-Christian) family member.

Some believe that Ezekiel was speaking prophetically in this passage about a time in the future, when Jesus would introduce the New Covenant, bringing about a change: “The soul who sins is the one who will die.  The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son.  The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.

But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.  None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him…….But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live?  None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die.”  Ezekiel 18:20-22, 24

But what does Jesus say about this in the New Testament?  Does he speak of curses with regards to generations?

“Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them.  So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.  Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’  Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.  Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.”  Luke 11: 47-51

So Jesus placed responsibility for the sins of their forefathers upon them.  This was a generational curse that Jesus placed on that generation.

In another place, we see that the Jews called down a curse upon themselves and their children.  When Jesus was brought before Pilate, he could see clearly that Jesus was innocent and he made every attempt to set him free.  The Jews would not hear of it for they wanted him crucified. “‘I am innocent of this man’s blood,’ he said.  ‘It is your responsibility!’”

“All the people answered, ‘His blood is on us and on our children!’”  Matthew 27:24-25

In the Book of Revelation is a warning, and a curse:  “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.  And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him, his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.  He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”  Revelations 22:18-20

This last curse is not a generational curse, but it is a curse nonetheless.

So, I believe that you could choose for yourself, what you want to believe about generational curses.  But I choose to believe and trust in my relationship with God. And that leads me to say that God is eternal, and is the same yesterday, today and forever.  Therefore, I believe that if I misunderstand his intention, or if I get something entirely wrong, he will correct me. I will pray, and seek God to reveal any open doors to the enemy in my loved ones’ lives, and any generational curses that could affect their lives or impede their walk with the Lord.

We know that Jesus overcame sin and death, by his death on a cross.  We know that the blood of Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law.  And we know that, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:9

Now, after prayer:

Hallelujah!  I have my answer.  I had read several articles, refuting the possibility of generational curses still affecting people today.  So I began to ask God, ”Is it possible that what I have accepted as fact, is not true? Yet, you showed me that I was to write on this subject, and I believe that you wanted me to share this with others, so that they could become free.”

So I was just praying now, asking the Lord to show me the word “Yes,” if the generational curses still applied today.  I also asked, that if it were simply that individuals in my family opened doors themselves, allowing these tragedies to occur, then please show me the word “open” or “door.”  And I asked, if these occurrences were the the result of a familiar spirit working in a family, then show me the word, “family.” My Lord is so wonderful! I opened my Bible, and looked at the right hand page.  It happened to be page 503, and the very first word at the top of the page was “Yes.”

I sometimes get overwhelmed by the Lord’s faithfulness.  It says in the word, “Call to me and I will answer you, and tell you great and wonderful things that you do not know.”  Jeremiah 33:3

He does not want us to be confused or unsure of such things.  The word also tells us, “My people perish, for lack of knowledge.” Hosea 4:6

And, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”  Proverbs 29:18

So it makes sense that if the Lord were to show me a vision of a white envelope with the address: T Welsch, he would also know that it would direct me to my brother who would fill me in as to the identity of T Welsch and the family lineage. God gives us visions because we are to share with the body of Christ for their edification. So I believe that people need to know of generational curses, so they can be broken, and made null and void.

We need to always seek God’s counsel.  Everyone has opinions, and personal convictions, but when we seek God, he will confirm and make known what he wants us to understand.  “I have much more to say to you, more that you can now bear.  But when he, the Spirit of truth , comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on is own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine.  That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”  John 16:12-15

So the Lord wants his people to not live under these curses.  He showed me years ago, (2004?) in my post of a vision I entitled, “Judgment, Mercy, Judgment, Mercy…”  that he brings judgment first, so that he can show his mercy.  I believe that the curses, are put in place, not just as punishment, but so that people will experience hardship, and will turn to the Lord in repentance.  This is an example:

“I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me,’ declares the Lord.

‘I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another.  One field had rain; and another had none and dried up. People staggered from town to town for water but did not get enough to drink, yet you have not returned to me,’ declares the Lord.

‘Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, destroying them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me,’ declares the Lord.

‘I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt long ago.  I killed your young men in war and led all your horses away. The stench of death filled the air! But still you would not return to me,’ says the Lord.”   Amos 4:9-10

So the sins of one generation, bring judgment on that generation and then continue.  It is for our healing and reconciliation to God, that these judgments, or curses are given.  It may not seem right - but I believe it is for our good, so that we turn to God. As the above scriptures point out, not everyone or every time will people return to God.

I would like to share an article with you regarding Generational Sins and Curses by Moody Church Media, written by Erwin W. Lutzer:   https://www.moodymedia.org/articles/are-there-generational-sins-and-curses/

When we sincerely and humbly repent for the sins of our forefathers, and for our own sin, we can break the curse in the Name of Jesus.  Jesus said, “Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.”  Luke 23:34

We cancel the power of the curse in the Name of Jesus.  We bind up any demonic entities and powers that use this curse as a legal right to harm us, in the name of Jesus.  We loose all family members in this bloodline affected by this curse in the name of Jesus. And we declare this curse to be null and void in the name of Jesus.  We declare that the blood of Jesus paid for the sins that brought about this curse. And we thank the Lord Jesus for his shed blood that purchased us, for himself.   Thank you Jesus, for your death on the cross that has freed us from this generational curse. To God be the glory, for the things he has done!

I also would like to share another link to a series of prayers for deliverance, soul-ties and generational curses, provided by Great Bible Study :   http://greatbiblestudy.com/deliverance_prayers.php

I hope this helps any of you who are interested in being free of generational curses, and would like to pursue deliverance for anything that has a controlling influence on your life.

God bless you and keep you,  May his face shine upon you and grant you peace.  Amen!
